We are thrilled to welcome associate attorney Alex M. Lawson to the Anderson Hunter Law Firm! She brings a strong foundation in several areas of law as well as a deep commitment to helping people through legal issues that impact their daily lives.

Alex primarily practices family law. She helps clients with dissolution, divorce, legal separation, child custody, child support, parenting plans, protection orders, and minor guardianships.

“My passion for supporting survivors of domestic violence runs deep, and I am always happy to serve these courageous and resilient survivors,” she says. “I am also a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and seek to support others, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity. Everyone deserves respect.”

A Passion For Helping People

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Alex came to the U.S. in 2000. Despite having the last name “Lawson,” there were no lawyers in her family. She developed an interest in law as a teenager but never thought it was for her until she started working with real lawyers at a nonprofit supporting reproductive health care rights.

Alex graduated cum laude from the University of Buffalo with a BA in International Relations. She went on to thrive at the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she served her community with well over 100 pro bono service hours per semester. She was one of the first two students ever permitted to practice in a legal clinic as a second-year law student. In her third year, she was chosen to represent a military combat veteran seeking VA benefits, arguing against the United States at the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Since graduating from law school two years ago, Alex has focused her practice on family law. She loves being able to help people with issues that impact their personal lives.

“You really are in the trenches with people, and, you know, trying your best to hold their hand through the hard part,” Alex says about her chosen career. “That’s primarily why I do what I do.”

A New Community In Washington State

After spending time up and down the East Coast, Alex took the plunge to move to Washington state. She met the Anderson Hunter Law Firm’s Laurie Ummel through a mentor and was pleased to find that she aligned with Laurie’s values and styles of practice.

“I was enamored by her fearless zealous advocacy for her clients and clear dedication to the craft,” Alex says. “The rest of the team at Anderson Hunter are no different and I am beyond grateful that I get to practice and learn from the incredible attorneys and staff here.”

Alex is now a member of the Washington State Bar Association Family Law Division (FLD) and Young Lawyers Division (YLD). She is also part of the Snohomish County Bar Association and the Domestic Relations Attorneys of Washington (DRAW).

Outside of her work for the Anderson Hunter Law Firm, Alex also volunteers for Snohomish County Legal Services family law clinic every other week. She also enjoys volunteering as an attorney rater for middle school and high school mock trials during their competition season.

In her spare time, Alex enjoys hiking, mini road trips, pickleball, and true crime podcasts. She’s happy to talk for hours about cases like the Alex Murdaugh murders in South Carolina or the Michael Peterson case in Durham, North Carolina. Fun fact: portions of the Netflix documentary series, The Staircase, were filmed at her law school.
